Wells vs Burnham & Berrow

Wells hosted Burnham in this week's Avalon fixture. After playing them the previous day in the Rose Bowl a completely different side turned up at Wells.

First out were young gun Ben Barnett and the wise old'un Mike Metcalfe giving their opponents 7 and 9 shots. After losing the 1st the Wells pairing played some tidy golf but after a contentious issue on 14 the Wells pair were 1 up. On the 15th one of the Burnham pair holed a monstrous 40 footer for birdie but Mr Metcalfe calmly stroked a 15 footer down the slope for a half in front of the onlooking captain Mr Cherry on the balcony.  After losing the 17th they were all on square on the 18th tee and a missed 10 footer from Ben saw the 1st match halved. Second out were Will Thompson and Glen Crocker, another mixture of youth and experience. Another tight game ensued with the score toing and froing around the course with Will holing a putt on 18 to gain another half for the Wells team.

Third out was another young gun in Josh Higgs and he was paired with another experienced campaigner in Paul Cullen. Paul had a bad start losing a few balls in the first three holes but then found his form and with Josh's prodigious length scaring the opposition the pairing strolled to a comfortable 2 and 1 victory.

The 4th pairing was Dean Lewer and James Stone who also had to give a large number of shots to their opponents, one of whom was using a lovely set of Mizuno bladed irons. Another close match that went to the 18th, 2 greats shots into the green by James who just missed his birdie on the low side and the Wells pairing lost 1 down.

Last out were last year's most victorious pairing of Ian Burr and Nick Poore who for the first time in ages had to give their opponents shots. They were always up against it and finally succumbed 2 and 1 giving Burnham the match victory 3 - 2.

Next match for the Avalon team is at Stockwood Vale where they will be hoping to return to winning ways.
