The Avalon league is a 4BBB league; it is a friendly but competitive.
The Wells team will be playing in the 4th division in 2019 season with a maximum handicap of 16. (Players with higher handicaps are able to play but would have to play off 16.)
Meet on Sundays and play a 4BBB format. These are friendly but competitive matches both home and away.
We are a thriving section of the club and we all enjoy our wonderful sport of golf.
There is a full diary of golf competitions; medals, stablefords, trophy and county competitions. We enjoy playing in the Bristol and District Ladies Alliance League and the Somerset Inter-club League. We have teams for the Somerset County competitions such as the Rogers Cup and the Centenary Plate as well as taking part in the Daily Mail and Ping competitions to mention just a couple.
We arrange friendly matches against other clubs in the area and this is a good way to play new courses and make new friends. We enjoy playing in the mixed club competitions too, and there are a number of mixed friendly matches against other clubs throughout the year.
We are keen to encourage new people into the sport and there are always willing ladies to help you take those first tentative steps around the course! If you have not a got a handicap – never fear, we will help you to gain one, and introduce you to other members to play with in fun competitions whilst you gain confidence.
The Ladies Locker Room is the hub for the Section with full details on our competitions clearly displayed on the various notice boards. Our usual Ladies Roll-up is Tuesday, particularly in the winter, where ladies arrive before 9.30 and names are drawn to play in groups.
We have a reputation for being a friendly and welcoming club so why not come and see for yourselves.
The Seniors' Section is a very active and friendly section of Wells Golf Club and welcomes all men who have reached the age of 55.
We play friendly matches (home and away) against a number of other clubs. We organise competitions throughout the year including monthly Medals, the Club Seniors’ Championship, and the Seniors’ Open.
Groups of Seniors play in regular “roll up” meetings on most days but the larger groups are on on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday mornings. New members who would like to play in these will be made welcome if they just arrive on the tee. Alternatively, they can contact any of the Seniors’ Committee who will be happy to introduce them to the groups.
The Seniors' Section has a fixture list of 34 matches against other clubs.
These are played in pairs in 4BBB format and players from all ranges of handicap are very welcome to play. The matches are very sociable, friendly events and although we play to win, that is not the main objective.
In 2021, we will be using the 'Intelligent Golf' system (iG) for running matches. Seniors sign up on iG through our website and enter their availability for matches. The Captain will view the list on iG, select his team, usually 2 weeks before the match, and notify all players. The results will be available on iG after the captain has entered the results and match report. Teams normally consist of 12 players , occasionally 14. Matches generally start at 12 noon and all team members are expected to stay for the meal after the match, and for home matches, be hosts for their guests from the visiting club. Matches are played on weekdays. The after match dress code is usually smart casual and club tie or just smart casual.
Throughout the year we have internal competitions including Monthly Medals. The Club's Seniors' Championship is 36 holes, played over two days, usually on Tuesday and Thursday in the same week. Competitions are played in various formats with a combination of both individual and pairs. There are plenty of opportunities to maintain a handicap. Our Seniors Open is very popular and in 2021 we will be hosting two, in May (2-Ball Texas Scramble) and September (4BBB).
Wells Golf Club would like to offer a warm welcome to all juniors.
We are actively encouraging new junior members by offering special membership deals and coaching sessions.
At Wells we aim to provide our Juniors with a rounded experience of the 'game of golf'. From tuition to competitive team golf we have the structure in place to develop a junior's potential and enable them to enjoy our great sport.
We have developed a 12 hole Academy Par 3 course which is a great asset to the younger and less experienced golfers and enables them to progress onto the full 18 hole course in the future.
In 2014 Wells Golf club started a fully funded Scholarship Program for the junior section. The Scholarship squad consists of a group of juniors who are involved in various levels of coaching and events. It is not age or handicap related; just enthusiastic juniors who are committed and prepared to work at their golf throughout the Spring and Summer.
Competitions are held throughout the year, with a Club Championship for the both full and Academy courses, along with the Harry Parkes Summer Knockout, the JDY Summer Shield and our Junior Open which will this year be Daily Telegraph Qualifier. Regular Roll Up's are also arranged on the Academy 12 which the gives the juniors a great introduction to friendly competitive golf.
With a team in the Somerset Junior Golf league our juniors also have the opportunity to play home and away team golf against 4 other clubs in the county.
Membership is £49 or free if the junior is under 18 and their parent is a full member.
If you are interested in learning more about the Junior Section, please feel free to contact us and we will get one of our Professionals or the Junior Organiser to contact you.
