Despite the poor weather forecast, Wells Stragglers took on Mendip Spring in blustery conditions but fortuitously, the majority of the rain stayed away and the Fixture was played out in a great team spirit.
First up for the Stragglers were Duncan Bratt and Terry Pearce, who went out against Dave Treleaven and Martin Yates for Mendip, the highlight of this Match being Duncan's incredible Eagle on the Par 5 thirteenth but sadly, this could not save the Home Side from going down 3 & 1.
Second out for Wells was Home Captain Simon Harris, accompanied by South Africa's finest, Rory Passmore, who were pitted against Mendip's Captain Tim Nicholls and Dave Rich. This Match was very much "nip and tuck", taking until the sixth Hole before either Pair Won a Hole, however, Rory's consistency and Simon's hanging on was enough for Wells to prevail 4 & 2.
Third out for Wells were youngsters John Hockey and Terry Searle who at a combined age of 163 years old, did very well to even find their Opponents, Steve Welch and Chris Mills!! However, John's persistent badgering of the opposition about having to give too many shots away was not enough, as Mendip ran out Winners 2 Up.
The penultimate Pairing for Wells were the Club President, George Davis and Club Chairman Bill Levell, who had their work cut out against Mendip "youngsters", Nathan Walker and Gus Anacleto. A great game ensued which went all the way to the last Hole, with Mendip eventually running out Winners 1 Up.
The final Wells Pairing was Vice-Captain Guy Timson, known affectionately as "El Bandito" and Stragglers Debutant Aaron Thurston, who the previous Day had Carded a GROSS 76, against Andrew Cardus-Hall and Robin Taylor from Mendip. Clearly the Home Pairing were pushing to go out first next time, as they comfortably came in Winners 7 & 6 - very well played indeed Guys!!
Overall, this made the Match Result Wells 2 Pts. - Mendip Spring 3 Pts. but I think we would all agree that this was a very enjoyable Afternoon with the Golf played in the manner it should be and a special thanks to Alan, along with his Catering Team for the Food provided.
Thoughts now turn to our next two Fixtures, Tall Pines at Home on Sunday 4th July and Sherborne Away on Sunday 11th July, and it would be very much appreciated if everybody could make known their availability for both of these Fixtures as soon as possible.
