After a severe loss the previous week to Worlebury, the Wells Avalon team wanted to bounce back with a win against Weston-Super-Mare on Sunday 10th April.
With the course benefiting from the recent warmer weather and the trees beginning to bud, Wells created quite a challenge for the visiting team who are more used to the generous fairways resulting in the frequent sound of balls hitting timber.
First out, Darren Barnett and Justin Chadburn built on their previous week’s “learning experience” turning in a fine 3 & 2 win. Solid iron from both players saw the home team 3up after 5 holes. W-S-M birdie on 6 started a mini fight back and the home team led by 1 at the turn. Justin’s birdie at the 12th restoring the 3-hole lead with the nip and tuck returning until a 3-putt on 16th conceded the game. Nice feeling for Justin and Darren following the previous week.
Group 2 was Peter Cherry (this season’s Capt) and Paul Cullen, used their previous Avalon experience to good effect, winning 3 & 2. Whilst the golf was great from the home team, for those following this fourball it felt like no putts were ever conceded as they ensured a close to 5 hour round was endured by all behind them....well worth it though for the points that they secured.
Group 3 was Chris Gladwell and Glen Crocker. Chris was the only winner from the previous week to tee up again this week and he continued his unbeaten streak, this time with the seasoned campaigner Glen. Whilst the W-S-M players had their challenges with the trees, Chris decided to use “local knowledge” on the 7th landing his ball in the centre of the green via the nearby timber. Fortunately, Chris’s 4 putt on 12 was not repeated by Glen on 17, where he showed nerves of steels as well as a deft touch to secure the up and down and a comfortable 2 &1 win.
Group 4 saw Rory Passmore and Nick Poore, who had secured a half the previous week, sadly suffer the only loss of the day despite a valiant effort, eventually succumbing 2 & 1. Both Nick & Rory blew hot and cold on a day that saw them surrender a 2 up advantage after 8 holes. Opposition birdies at 9 and 11 restored parity before some woeful putting swung the game the way of the opposition. Rumour has it that Nick is still waking up in a cold sweat shouting “Rory, surely you can’t miss that one as well...”
Group 5 was Duncan Bratt and Bryan Ashton. Having suffered a brutal loss the previous week, both spent the week cleaning their wounds and were set for revenge. Arghhhh both drives OOB of the first wasn’t the planned start but scrambled a quick half. Monstrous putt on 6 for birdie, the home team headed to the 7th 3-up. The unexpected response from W-S-M on eight, birdie putt sunk from the back of the green meant the nett eagle went unanswered. The game stabilised after that until Bryan’s hot run at 13 and 14, net birdie followed by the monstrous chip in birdie restored the home team 3 hole advantage. The game was eventually won 2 & 1.
The team earned 10pts from the game and have time to consider the forthcoming match at home to Long Sutton. The new Avalon squad has grown following the early engagement for the new management team, not all squad players have had the opportunity to play yet but the season is still early.
