Avalon Match Report Wells v Wheathill

Wells Avalon only a week after their success against Long Sutton were out again versus Wheathill A team.

The overnight rain had just about cleared when the weather changed, now from the East returning with the rain that missed the course during the night. Full waterproofs on the matches set out:

Group 1 made up of Darren Barnett and Justin Chadburn, returning to the fray the pair parred the first going 1-up early. Wheathill’s response was immediate winning the 2nd. 3rd saw the home team back in front until birdie on the 5th returned the game to all square. Good home team play saw the lead at the turn being 2 holes and extend the lead to 5 by 13th. Final winning par on 14th closed the game early for Darren and Justin with a 5 & 4 win.

Group 2 was made up of Rory Passmore with new partner Bryan Ashton. Sadly for Wheathill they could only field 1 player. Bryan fresh from his recent trip to several Welsh courses including invaluable putting lesson started extremely quickly, 3 up after 3. The opposition then managed to stem the flow with 5 straight halved holes. With the turn in sight, Rory and Bryan pressed on against the single member of the opposition who finally succumbed to the next 4 holes leaving Rory and Bryan to an early finish completing a 7 & 6 win and dry off.

Group 3 was John Parkhouse and Glen Crocker. This could be the strongest pairing of the season and their knowledge of each other’s game ever growing. Following a terrible start the Wheathill team led benefitting from some spectacular golf. On the 6th Glen dumped his 2nd into the bunker, this seemed to trigger the astonishing run of events; Glen slam dunked his bunker shot only for the ball to rebound out of the hole to 4ft. With Wheathill some 5ft for birdie, up step John. His 30ft birdie putt was drained leaving the pressure back on Wheathill, the birdie was duly missed. The fight back began; Wells team controlling proceeding from there with solid golf for the pair of players. The game closed out on the 15th, Glen summoning John’s timber skills got to 30ft for par, meantime Wheathill some 50yds away with their drives failed to grab the opportunity and best they could do was a bogie. Glen closed out with a fine par and the game was won.

Group 4 saw Freddie Lovell enter the league with Peter Cherry, this match did have 2 opponents. Battling against the rain the start was slow for the Peter and Freddie. The 3rd saw Freddie unleash a fairway finding 300yd drive which seem to effect the oppositions confidence. Freddie followed with more high quality golf displaying notable drives on the 8th and 11th were looking strong for an early win. Freddie with an eagle putt on the 12th got the home team to an unassailable position which they closed on out the 13th for another strong Wells win at 6&5.

Group 5 Duncan Bratt and Dave Baker. Whilst still raining the anchor group started strongly with a solid par. Dave finding the 2nd and Duncan the 3rd in regulation were 3 up after 3. The home team cemented their lead to 4 up after 7. A fine approach shot from Wheathill on the 8th led to the putt (inside 12” being conceded with a shot). A win on 10 maintained the strong home team lead which only ebbed by 1 coming into the 15th. Both Duncan and Dave close for 2 shots each left Wheathill with no opportunity to extend the game further gracefully conceded the match 4&3.

The team earned maximum 12pts and now lie 2nd in the league, level on points with Vivary but separated by superior win ratio. The new Avalon squad hasn’t fully settled and some strong away games coming there are a few low handicappers that haven’t been available yet.
